Carlo’s Italian Delicatessen

Carlo’s is a real family run business, that opened in 1987 supplying a range of primarily Italian products including meats, cheeses, wines and other grocery products. Lunch time is particularly busy serving grilled panini and Italian coffee, and I love the panettone! There is a strong Italian community in Chertsey and sometimes you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Italy when the regulars come in and start talking in their native tongue.

Carlo and Maria’s three sons Rosario, Robbie and Alex all work in the shop with their parents.

House Of Flowers

The House Of Flowers has been a florists for over 30 years, although Sam took it over at the height of the financial crash in the noughties, but as she says she’s known no different, so business is always good! This portrait is of Danni and Sam after a busy morning, working on a large order.

The Green Shop

The Green Shop has been in Chertsey for about 20 years selling a wide range of stationery, hardware and gifts. Nicky worked for the previous owner before taking over The Green Shop, which was previously a couple of doors further down Guildford Street. As you can see the shop is quite literally packed with all sorts of products!

Roberts The Butcher

Continuing my series of portraits of independent shopkeepers in Chertsey, this one is Ian of Roberts The Butcher. Roberts has been in Chertsey for 30 years, although when Ian took over the lease he found accounts books for the butchers dating back to 1904, and Roberts still serve one of the families listed in those accounts!

Apparently, back then, butchers never used to sell poultry and quite a few would only deal in pork.

Back At Brooklands

Brooklands Museum has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help towards their aim of re-engineering Brooklands. This involves moving the Bellman Hangar, which is currently located on the Finishing Straight of the Motor Racing Circuit, off of the circuit and reinterpreting it as the aircraft factory.

It was suggested to me by the museum that it would be good to have before and after photographs of the hangar shot in a similar vein to the night shots that formed part of my Spirit Of Brooklands Project and book. Never one to shy away from standing alone in the dark I took up the challenge and here is the final image, with the Finishing Straight in the foreground.

It will be a while before the hangar is moved but when it is I’ll be back, so to speak.

The Dinky Dove

The second in my series of portraits of Chertsey shopkeepers is Claire the owner of The Dinky Dove, which opened two years ago this week. The Dinky Dove sells a range of gifts, cards and homeware and has built up a regular loyal customer base; in fact whilst I was there one of her regulars came in to “get her fix” as she called it!

The Local Pound

I recently received a brochure through the post from a discount supermarket chain stating that they were considering opening a store in Chertsey where I live. This set me thinking about all the independently owned shops that are present in Chertsey and how they might be affected by the opening of this supermarket. There are a nice range of businesses in Chertsey including a butchers, bakers, green grocers, gift shop, florist, delicatessen, pet food shop, bike shop, electrical shop, hardware stores, pharmacist, and antique shop among others. These are all independently owned shops, some of whom have been in Chertsey for over thirty years.

I decided it would be good to celebrate these businesses and so have embarked upon a personal project to photograph these independent shopkeepers in their shops, would like to exhibit the final prints in one of the empty shops in the main street in Chertsey. I aim to emphasise what we have on our doorstep, in the hope that the residents of and visitors to Chertsey, embrace and support these local businesses.

I started with the most recent shop to open in Chertsey – The Chertsey Fruit & Veg Shop, which is owned by Sabba who hails from Syria but has been in the UK for twenty years, working in various restaurants, making his way up to restaurant manager, and in McLaren in Woking. Because of his experience with food Sabba is able to offer advice on his products including choosing the best orange for juicing or for eating! He has been open for just a few weeks and is open 7 days a week.

A Surgeon’s Breakfast

A Surgeon's Breakfast

Craig is a tall actor with close cropped hair who is often cast as a thug or villain due to his looks, and he is keen to expand his repertoire of characters, so we decided to take a light hearted approach to this portrait and cast him as an exhausted surgeon, who was on auto pilot, so much so that his breakfast turned in to just another operation.

I also photographed Craig another time for a different look.

The War of the Worlds

I recently went to Horsell Common, where the Martians first landed on Earth according to the H.G. Wells novel The War Of The Worlds, which was quite brilliantly put to music by Jeff Wayne. It was a cold and frosty day, but the light was lovely and I managed to get these shots. Three of them are available as signed limited edition Giclée prints on my Print Sales website.

I had to wait and wait for the light to change – suddenly a beam of light shone out across the common. I had to act fast – the chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one he said, But Still They Come….

Close To Home

As you may be aware I moved last year to Chertsey, which has been in the news a lot lately due to the flooding caused by the River Thames. My house is far enough away from the Thames to have escaped the flooding that has caused, although we also have the River Bourne and River Abbey much closer to us that have both flooded too. Again we have so far remained just out of reach. As it is something (I hope) we won’t see again I took the opportunity to create some images. Most of these were taken between the peaks of flooding, but it gives you an idea of what Mother Nature is capable of.
