Today Is Tomorrow's History
Continuing my series of portraits of Chertsey Artists in their studios, here is Simon Gannicliffe who is a painter and enjoys life drawing:

Chertsey Artists are a very talented bunch of artists who run a variety of workshops and art sessions from their studios in Chertsey. However their premises are under threat of redevelopment and they contacted me to help underline what they do for the community and the arts, to see if the development could be avoided or a new home could be found. As well as creating portraits of some of the artist in their studios, I attended some of their portrait sessions to capture the artists at work, which you can see below.
However this did mean I had put myself in the firing line and was cajoled in to sitting for one of the portrait sessions. Sitting still was my main concern but somehow I managed it. You can see the resulting portraits at the end of this post.

Heater’s Bakery in Windsor Street, Chertsey is one of a small number of family run bakers shops in Surrey. They bake all their own bread in Bisley and deliver it to their shops fresh.

43 Guildford Street in Chertsey is home to Paul Simonson’s studio where he designs and makes unique bridal gowns. Paul also lectures at The Design School in Kingston University.

Alan and Jeanette have owned Carpetrama in Chertsey since 1991. Being in a shop in Windsor Street with large windows they have had a big screen viewing of some of the filming activities that have taken place in Chertsey over the years.

Continuing with my local shopkeepers theme, the No Naked Walls art gallery in Windsor Street, Chertsey was taken over by Sharon four years ago and has a loyal following. Sharon herself is a painter and has been a member of Chertsey Artists since 2003.

The shop that is now D’eyncourt Antiques in Chertsey has a long and varied history having previously been a photographers premises, and 49 years ago it became a drawing office where Maureen and her partner worked, before changing it into an antique shop.

Chertsey Artists is a society of artists who provide a range of workshops, courses and art sessions in Surrey. Their current site contains several artists studios, a gallery and a print room where many art related activities are held, but the site is under threat from a planning application that would force them to leave their studios. I was asked to create some portraits of the artists in their studio to aid awareness of their plight.
This is John Bergwyn Green, who is primarily a figurative artist and illustrator.

The Honeycomb Pharmacy was opened in Chertsey by Mr Shah 34 years ago and Mrs Shah joined the pharmacy 4 years later, having been a microbiologist for Cadbury Schweppes. This is Mrs Shah and their dog Charlie.

Carlo’s is a real family run business, that opened in 1987 supplying a range of primarily Italian products including meats, cheeses, wines and other grocery products. Lunch time is particularly busy serving grilled panini and Italian coffee, and I love the panettone! There is a strong Italian community in Chertsey and sometimes you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Italy when the regulars come in and start talking in their native tongue.
Carlo and Maria’s three sons Rosario, Robbie and Alex all work in the shop with their parents.
