Portraits of Runnymede

I have started a new project in collaboration with Chertsey museum to photograph many different people in Runnymede for an exhibition being held in the museum from October 2016. The idea is just to create some great images whilst capturing the people in Runnymede. Everybody who gets photographed will be included in the exhibition. I have set up a separate blog where a lot of the images will be released periodically and you can follow it here.

I’ll provide updates about the progress and the exhibition on both blogs to keep everyone happy.

This is Roger.

No Naked Walls

Continuing with my local shopkeepers theme, the No Naked Walls art gallery in Windsor Street, Chertsey was taken over by Sharon four years ago and has a loyal following. Sharon herself is a painter and has been a member of Chertsey Artists since 2003.

D’eyncourt Antiques

The shop that is now D’eyncourt Antiques in Chertsey has a long and varied history having previously been a photographers premises, and 49 years ago it became a drawing office where Maureen and her partner worked, before changing it into an antique shop.

Chertsey Artists

Chertsey Artists is a society of artists who provide a range of workshops, courses and art sessions in Surrey. Their current site contains several artists studios, a gallery and a print room where many art related activities are held, but the site is under threat from a planning application that would force them to leave their studios. I was asked to create some portraits of the artists in their studio to aid awareness of their plight.

This is John Bergwyn Green, who is primarily a figurative artist and illustrator.

Carlo’s Italian Delicatessen

Carlo’s is a real family run business, that opened in 1987 supplying a range of primarily Italian products including meats, cheeses, wines and other grocery products. Lunch time is particularly busy serving grilled panini and Italian coffee, and I love the panettone! There is a strong Italian community in Chertsey and sometimes you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Italy when the regulars come in and start talking in their native tongue.

Carlo and Maria’s three sons Rosario, Robbie and Alex all work in the shop with their parents.

House Of Flowers

The House Of Flowers has been a florists for over 30 years, although Sam took it over at the height of the financial crash in the noughties, but as she says she’s known no different, so business is always good! This portrait is of Danni and Sam after a busy morning, working on a large order.

Spider Awards

Three of my black and white street photos were nominated for the Spider Awards, and one managed to get a “Honourable Mention”, which is all quite exciting.

The Green Shop

The Green Shop has been in Chertsey for about 20 years selling a wide range of stationery, hardware and gifts. Nicky worked for the previous owner before taking over The Green Shop, which was previously a couple of doors further down Guildford Street. As you can see the shop is quite literally packed with all sorts of products!

Roberts The Butcher

Continuing my series of portraits of independent shopkeepers in Chertsey, this one is Ian of Roberts The Butcher. Roberts has been in Chertsey for 30 years, although when Ian took over the lease he found accounts books for the butchers dating back to 1904, and Roberts still serve one of the families listed in those accounts!

Apparently, back then, butchers never used to sell poultry and quite a few would only deal in pork.
