The Floods Return to Chertsey

  • by

It was 10 years ago since Chertsey last saw flooding like this. It was largely the same places that flooded and the same people whose lives were turned upside down again. In the meantime there has been very little progress (none?) in preventing flooding from causing distress and financial hardship for those affected, not to mention the health affects from being exposed to raw sewage, which is routinely dumped in our rivers.

Chertsey has 3 rivers; the Thames, the Abbey and the Bourne. At the time of writing (January 12th 2024) Thames Water are dumping raw sewage into the River Bourne, and have been since January 2nd, currently 251+ hours and counting. It hasn’t rained since January 4th.

I’m not sure there’s much I can add to the photos, so I think I’ll leave you to judge for yourself, but please check out the previous blog post about the flooding in 2014.

******UPDATE****** Just a few days after posting this I received a letter through the post from the River Thames Scheme, which is a scheme designed to reduce the chances of flooding in the Runnymede & Spelthorne area. It has currently just started the public consultation phase, which is a statutory requirement, with the target completion date of 2030, so still a way to go but at least the wheels are turning.
